World No. 8 America’s Serena Williams reached the semi-finals of the US Open for the 11th consecutive time. She defeated Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. This was Pironkova’s first tournament in three years. On the other hand, Deniil Medvedev of Russia also reached the semi-finals of the US Open. He beat Andre Rublev 7-6 (6), 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the quarter-finals. Medvedev reached the semi-finals without losing a single set. Neil Fraser won the US Open in 1960. He did not lose a single set then.
Serena to face Azarenka in the semi-finals:
Serena will face former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals. Azarenka reached the semi-finals of the US Open after 7 years. She defeated Elise Mertens 6–1, 6–0 in the quarterfinals. There have been 22 bouts between Serena and Azarenka so far. Serena has won 18 matches and Azarenka 4 matches. Serena had previously defeated Azarenka in the finals of the 2012 and 2013 US Open.
Alexander Zverev entered the semi-finals too:
Germany’s Alexander Zverev also reached the US Open final-four. They defeated Croatia’s Borna Coric 1-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in a three-hour, 24-minute match. He is the first German player to reach the semi-finals of the US Open in the last 25 years. Boris Becker achieved this feat in 1995 before him.
Zverev will now face Pablo Carreno Busta. Pablo reached the semi-finals of the Grand Slam for the second time by defeating Denis Shapovalov of Canada 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted more than four hours.
Thiem also reached the semi-finals
Second-seeded Dominic Thiem also reached the semi-finals of the US Open. He defeated Alex de Minaur 6–1, 6–2 and 6–4. He is the first player from Austria to reach the final four of the US Open. He will face Medvedev in the semi-finals.
