Uttar Pradesh: A 30-year-old woman was set on fire by her in-laws in the Kalupura village of Rabupura area of Greater Kailash. The incident happened on Tuesday night has added to the already declining law and order situation in the state.

Police officials well-known with the matter said that the victim's in-laws including her husband's parents and brother demanded Rs 5 lakh as dowry from her. Station House Officer (SHO), Rabapura police station, Sunil Singh said, the woman who is a mother of a six-and-a-half-year-old boy refused to give in to their demands. They then poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

He further added neighbors of the family rushed the woman to the Safdarjung Hospital where she has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A team of police officers was dispatched to the woman's home on December 25, however, the in-laws had already fled their home. Officials familiar with the matter said that the woman and her husband got married in June of 2010.

The woman's brother told that she called him on the day of the incident and urged him to pick her up from her in-laws' home. She was crying on the phone and told me that they were thrashing her, he said. In fact, the victim's brother also told the national daily that the family gave her in-laws many things as dowry at the time of the wedding, however, her alcoholic husband kept assaulting and harassing her for more.
