Uddhav Thackeray took over as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra today. A special session of the assembly has been called for tomorrow and NCP MLA Dilip Walse Patil has been appointed as the Protem Speaker. The newly elected Thackeray government may have to prove its majority tomorrow. He first paid tribute to the martyrs at Hutatma Chowk after leaving his residence from Matoshree before taking charge. Thackeray was accompanied by his son Aditya during this period. A large crowd of Thackeray supporters was gathered in the Secretariat. Before taking charge, Thackeray garlanded the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Significantly, to prove a majority in the 288-member Assembly, the support of 145 MLAs is needed. But Shiv Sena has only 56 MLAs. However, the NCP Congress and Shiv Sena together have 154 MLAs. This is more than the majority figure. The Samajwadi Party has also asked for support. Simultaneously, Shiv Sena has claimed that they have the support of 162 MLAs.

In the assembly elections, NCP won 54 seats, Congress 44 and BJP 105 seats. Shiv Sena and BJP contested the election. However, the two broke up after differences between the two over the chief minister's post.

The Shiv Sena's stand on the BJP has changed slightly since Uddhav Thackeray became the Chief Minister. Actually, Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana has an editorial. In which it is written that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uddhav Thackeray are like brothers. Even though the Shiv Sena and BJP alliance have split. It was further written that even though the paths of Shiv Sena and BJP in Maharashtra's politics have diverged, Modi and Thackeray have a brotherly relationship.
