Trial Hanging in Tihar Begins: Nirbhaya Case

Since the issuance of the death warrant in the name of Nirbhaya's culprits, the jail administration has been preparing for the hanging. In the midst of all the preparations, the trial process of hanging in the hanging house started in the jail number three started on Sunday. Jail officials say that four dummies have been made according to the weight of the four convicts. The four dummies were hanged on four traps made in the house. This trial process lasted for two hours. Public Works Department officials were also present during this period.

According to jail officials, the purpose of the trial was to find out whether the extension of the hanging house platform after repair was correct. The iron pipe on which the four culprits are built is strong or not. Sources say that a report has been prepared based on the results obtained during the trial, from which senior officials have been made aware. If any civil work related to the hanging in the hanging house is required, then the officials of the Public Works Department will be called immediately for the change.

It is a matter of satisfaction that the date of execution of the convicts of Nirbhaya has been set. But delay in judgment is a major problem in criminal cases in the country, where the entire process takes about 15 to 16 years from the time of registration of the crime to the final conviction. Many times lawsuits are held for decades on small pieces of land. The situation is even more serious in cases of foreclosure. We often hear and read in the news that more than the punishment awarded in crime, people take the sentence before the verdict. All this happens only because the speed of trial and verdict of the cases is very slow. The condition is so bad that in criminal cases, the accused finishes more than his possible sentence in jail and then his case can be heard somewhere. There have also been some references in the case of victims when it took up to 30 years for the accused to be convicted, although by then the accused had died. This pace of judicial system is disturbing.

It is also a major cause of rising crime and social tension. Due to excessive delays, many times there is a strong reaction from the general public. There is a popular saying that justice received late is like denial of justice, whereas getting justice on time is the right of every citizen. In such a situation, there is a need to think deeply about delay in getting justice and slow pace of hearing. To put people's trust in justice, efforts to deliver justice on time have to be intensified.
