TRAI: Need to Rethink Regarding ban on Channels Exemption

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a suggestion letter to revisit the ban on the offer of discounts offered by broadcasters on channel groups after the new regulatory framework for cable and broadcasting service was implemented.

Trai on Friday criticized the broadcasters, saying that the group is being misused by giving huge discounts to the group as there is no restriction on the discount offer on the price of different channels.

"The fee announced by the broadcasters under the new regulatory framework suggests that the exemption on the grouping of channels (bouquet) is up to 70 percent of the charges on individual channels," TRAI said in a statement. This shows that as there is no restriction on the discount offer for a group of channels, the broadcaster charges misleading charges for different channels which affect consumers' choice of individual channels.
