The Woman Transfused with HIV-positive Blood Gave Birth to Baby Girl

Tamil Nadu: The woman who was transfused with HIV-positive blood, gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday.

The unpleasant incident happened in Sattur district of  Tamil Nadu. The woman who was transfused with HIV-positive blood was under supervision and in care of a team of doctors at Rajaji Hospital since December 27.

At around 7 pm on Thursday, the woman went into labour and gave birth to a baby girl weighing 1.75 kg. No birth defects have been noted in the baby and the mother is also doing well.

On December 3, an eight-month-pregnant woman was diagnosed with anaemia, as a part of the treatment; she was transfused with HIV positive blood. The HIV+ blood was transfused due to a callous mistake by the doctor and the nurses of the government hospital.

The woman had filed an FIR against the doctor and the nurse at Sattur police station of Tamil Nadu.

Though, an investigation into the matter was ordered by the Tamil Government to ascertain whether more people were transfused the infected blood. Patients who were given blood in the similar time frame and from the same batch are being rechecked to know whether they are affected by the HIV+ blood.
