The Process of Vaccine Development is Being Expedited So that PM Modi Can Announce it on Independence Day: Sitaram Yechury

Yechury tweeted, 'The vaccine will be the most decisive solution to the global pandemic

CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Saturday alleged that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is trying to speed up the process of making the coronavirus vaccine, so that Prime Minister Narendra Modi can make an announcement regarding it on Independence Day. He said that scientific research cannot be done 'as per order'. The ICMR has asked selected medical institutions and hospitals to approve the potential vaccine 'covaxine' being developed in collaboration with Bharat Biotech for the purpose of making the COVID-19 indigenous vaccine available for medical use by 15 August.

The world is waiting for a safe vaccine that has worldwide reach

Yechury tweeted, 'The vaccine will be the most decisive solution to the global pandemic. The world is waiting for a safe vaccine that has worldwide reach. He said, 'But.. Scientific research cannot be done according to order. Bypassing all rules related to health and safety regulations, pressure is being made to develop indigenous vaccine for treatment of COVID-19 so that Prime Minister Modi can announce it on Independence Day. The human life has to pay high price for it.

'Using threats to make institutions do their job'

Yechury accused the ICMR of 'using threats to make institutions do their job'. He said that some institutes like NIMS in Hyderabad are state government institutions. Yechury further said, "Has the Telangana government given permission?."

Asking many questions regarding the tests, Yechury said, 'How many people will be studied in this test? Will the first, second and third phase tests be completed by August 14 and their analysis will be completed. Who are the members of the Independent Data Security Monitoring Committee (DSMC)? Some serious questions need to be answered.

He questioned how the ICMR could fix the date of making the vaccine available despite the Controller General of India (DCGI) not assessing the evidence that the vaccine is safe and effective. Yechury said, "What is the responsibility of ICMR in pressuring aggressively to test vaccines being developed by a private company?"
