Tamil Nadu: iPhone Plant ‘Foxconn India’ to Reopen On Jan 12 with 500 Workers

iPhone plant in India, Foxconn is likely to reopen its manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu on Jan 12 ie Wednesday. According to Reuters news agency, Apple Inc supplier, Foxconn will reopen an iPhone manufacturing facility along with 500 workers, government officials, and a legislator in the region where the plant is located.

In the town of Sriperumbudur near Chennai’s Tamil Nadu state, the Foxconn plant employed about 17,000 people but due to protests over 250 of its workers who fell sick because of food poisoning, was closed on Dec 18. Since then Apple has put its factory on a probation period after noticing that some of the requirements of lodging room and dining rooms were not met. Foxconn and Apple did not respond immediately to the request for comment.

Plant to be reopened on January 12- Chief Minister MK Stalin

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin told K Selvaperunthagai, Chairman of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Section in the assembly late on Friday that the plant will reopen on January 12, Wednesday with 500 workers. According to the government officials, Foxconn planned to resume production gradually but have not been informed yet when the full workforce would be back to work.

Government officials have said that Apple has eight other suppliers in India and Foxconn has been making iPhone 12 and testing iPhone 13 at the Sriperumbudur facility, the only plant in India. Tamil Nadu is a state of more than 70 million people and is known as one of the most industrialized states in the country. Many factories including BMW, Daimler, Hyundai, Nissan, and Renault are based here. Due to the presence of major automobile manufacturing units and industries, the state is sometimes called the “Detroit of Asia”.

Government is planning to build hostel facility

Keeping this incident in mind, K Selvaperunthagai told Reuters that the state government will build a hostel facility for thousands of workers with the capacity to house tents. The Government is clear that they do not want such incidents to happen again. So, the government officials said that they will build a hostel facility to address the concerns about living standards and dining facilities.
