Sumit Nagal Aims to Reach Top-80 for Tokyo Olympics Quota

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal on Friday said that he is aiming to make it to the top-100 in the ATP rankings and after that he will try to reach the top-80 in a campaign to win the Olympic quota. "First I will try to make it to the top-100 and then set a goal to make it to the top-80 so that I can make it to the Olympics," Nagal said at an event held here.

Nagal is currently ranked 130 in the ATP rankings and is currently practicing for the 2020 season at the Aspire Foundation Center in the IIT-Madras campus. Nagal had a good season in which he made it to the main draw of the US Open and then defeated veteran tennis star Roger Federer in one set.

Nagal was ranked 340 at the end of 2018 but after a good performance in the year he managed to reach 130. He said, "The biggest thing for me this season was to survive injuries. I used to play seven to eight months every year for the last four-five years. This was the first time in the last five years that I had played the entire season without getting injured."  On the question behind practicing in Chennai, he said that the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open, also has the same weather as Chennai. So he decided to practice in Chennai.
