Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: India, South Korea Match Ends in a Draw

India conceded in the dying stages of the game to play out a 1-1 draw with Korea in their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup clash here on Sunday.

In the final moments, the Indian hockey team had to compel Korea to play 1-1 in the second match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Sunday. In the first match, Manpreet Singh-led team, who registered a 2-0 win over Asian Games champion Japan, took the lead in Mandeep Singh's goal in the 28TH minute of the game.

When it seemed that the Indian team was close to registering its winning streak in the six teams, only one minute before the final whistle, Korea's Jonghyun Jang scored the goal to equalize the team.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rains, the game was stopped for a while in the fourth quarter. When the rain started, there were only eight minutes left to play at that time. India started a good start.

Midfielder Vivek Sagar made a good move inside the circle but Korean defenders foiled his effort. Defender Surender Kumar then foiled the attack of Korea. India got the first penalty corner in the tenth minute but the team failed to convert it into the goal.

India got the second penalty corner in the second quarter but the drag flick was stopped by the Korean goalkeeper. Three Korean players Kim Hyeongjin, Jihun Yang and Lee Namyong were shown green card after this, after which they were only eight players on the field. India took advantage of this and in the 28th minute experienced veteran Mandeep Singh gave India the edge.

At the interval, the Indian team was 1-0 ahead. In the third quarter, no team could score goals.

India had defeated Japan 2-0 in its opening game on Saturday. Varun Kumar converted a penalty corner in the 24th minute to put India ahead before Simranjeet Singh scored a diving field goal from skipper Manpreet Singh's brilliant pass to secure full three points for the five-time champion.

The Indians will next face Malaysia on Tuesday.
