From Atiq to Mukhtar: Two Chapters of Terror Closed in Purvanchal Within a Year

Within the past year, the reign of terror orchestrated by two mafia dons, Atiq Ahmed and Mukhtar Ansari, has come to an end in Uttar Pradesh.

Both held considerable sway in their territories to the extent that nothing moved without their consent.

Atiq Ahmed held significant influence in southern UP (around Prayagraj and its vicinity), whereas Mukhtar Ansari's directives governed activities in Purvanchal.

However, following a change in power dynamics in UP, both of their reigns came to an end.

While Atiq Ahmed was fatally shot last year while being taken to the hospital, Mukhtar Ansari, incarcerated in jail, passed away during treatment after his health deteriorated.

These events mark the conclusion of two notorious chapters of terror in Uttar Pradesh.

Mukhtar Ansari, a former legislator and mafia don incarcerated in Banda Jail in Uttar Pradesh, suddenly fell ill on Thursday night. Around 8:30 PM, he was brought to the emergency ward of Rani Durgavati Medical College in a state of unconsciousness and complaining of nausea. However, during treatment, he suffered a cardiac arrest, leading to his demise.

Around 10 PM, authorities publicly announced Mukhtar's death, prompting a high alert across Uttar Pradesh. It's worth noting that Mukhtar Ansari had previously experienced health complications in jail, leading to his admission to the ICU of a hospital.

He had issues with bowel movements at that time. After treatment, he was sent back to jail, but unfortunately, his life couldn't be saved this time.

About a week before his death, Mukhtar Ansari had filed a plea in court alleging that he was being slowly poisoned.

Atiq Ahmed's killing occurred in April last year. In the case of Umesh Pal's murder, the police had taken Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf into custody last year.

On the night of April 15th in Prayagraj, around 10 PM, while the police were taking Atiq and his brother to the hospital for a medical examination, three assailants, posing as journalists—Arun Maurya, Sunny, and Lavlesh Tiwari—ambushed both brothers with a barrage of gunfire.

These three assailants had arrived near the police convoy posing as reporters. As soon as Atiq and his brother Ashraf began speaking to the media, they opened fire indiscriminately.

At the time of the attack, there were 19 police personnel assigned to the security of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf. However, despite this security detail, they couldn't save their lives.
