Haryana Assembly Polls: After extensive deliberation, Congress has released its first list of assembly candidates for Haryana. The list announces 32 candidates, including 28 sitting legislators who have been given tickets once again.
Among them is Mewa Singh from the Ladwa assembly seat, who has been fielded against Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Mewa Singh has emerged as a significant figure in Haryana's Congress politics.
Mewa Singh began his political career in 1985-86 by becoming the sarpanch of his village and later served as a member of the district council. He also took on the role of President of the Kurukshetra District Council for INLD. The Ladwa constituency was created by separating from the Thanesar constituency of Kurukshetra, and its first election was held in 2009.
Singh contested his first election on a BJP ticket in 2009 but secured only 21,775 votes, losing to INLD's Sher Singh.
In 2011, he left the BJP and joined Congress. However, he was unable to contest the 2014 elections due to being implicated in the JBT scam, so his wife, Bachan Kaur, stood for the election but faced a defeat.
In the 2019 elections, Congress's Mewa Singh won against BJP's Pawan Saini. Singh secured 57,665 votes, while Pawan Saini received over 45,000 votes. Mewa Singh won by a margin of over 12,000 votes.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is also contesting from the Ladwa seat, so Congress's Mewa Singh will be directly facing him. Historically, the Ladwa seat has seen frequent changes, with no candidate winning consecutive terms.
In 2009, INLD won the seat, in 2014 it went to BJP, and in 2019 Congress emerged victorious. It remains to be seen which candidate will win the support of Ladwa's electorate in this assembly election.
