Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has gained momentum with a significant boost. In a blow to the Congress, Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed, son of former Congress MLA Mateen Ahmed, joined AAP on Tuesday, October 29.
Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed's wife, Shagufta Chaudhary Zubair, who is a current Congress councilor, also joined AAP.
Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed served as the MLA for the Seelampur constituency continuously from 1993 to 2015. There is speculation that his son, Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed, will be AAP's candidate from Seelampur.
Zubair resigned from his role as President of the Babarpur District Congress Committee, submitting his resignation letter to Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav.
Confirming his resignation from Congress on 'X,' Zubair shared his resignation letter, stating, “I have resigned from Congress today and have sent my resignation to PCC Interim President Devender Yadav Ji.” In his resignation letter, he wrote, “This is to inform you all that I am resigning from the position of District President of Babarpur Congress Committee. I am stepping down from the primary membership for personal reasons. I am grateful to the party leadership for the opportunities and responsibilities entrusted to me.”
In both the 2015 and 2020 elections, the Seelampur assembly seat was won by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Mohammad Ishraque won in 2015, while Abdul Rehman secured victory in 2020.
From 1993 to 2013, Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed contested elections under various party banners, including Janata Dal, as an independent, and Congress, and he won all those elections.
