Anand Mohan's Release from Jail: On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Bihar government and other concerned parties regarding the plea filed by Uma Krishnaiah, the wife of slain IAS officer G Krishnaiah.
The plea challenges the premature release of politician Anand Mohan from jail.
The Bihar government and others were notified by a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
Uma Krishnaiah has alleged that the Bihar government amended the Bihar Prison Manual 2012 retrospectively on April 10, 2023, to ensure remission for Anand Mohan, a prisoner.
In her plea, Uma Krishnaiah claimed that the amendment made on April 10, 2023, is in violation of the Notification dated December 12, 2002, as well as public policy.
She further stated that the amendment is causing a loss of morale among the civil servants of the state, and hence, it is motivated by ill intentions, unjust and contrary to the principles of a welfare state.
Anand Mohan Singh, a former gangster who later turned into a politician, was released from Saharsa jail in the early hours of April 27th.
He was serving a life sentence for the murder of G Krishnaiah, who was the district magistrate of Gopalganj at the time, in 1994.
The Bihar government had recently amended the rules of the jail manual, and as a result, 27 prisoners who had served 14 or 20 years were ordered to be released, as per official notification.
Anand Mohan Singh was convicted for the murder of Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah, which took place on December 5, 1994, in Muzaffarpur. He was accused of inciting the crowd that killed Krishnaiah.
Anand Mohan was sentenced to death by a trial court in 2007 for the murder of G Krishnaiah.
However, the Patna High Court reduced his sentence to life imprisonment in 2008.
Despite his appeal to the Supreme Court, Anand Mohan has not been granted any relief and has been serving his sentence at Saharsa jail since 2007.
