World Cup 2019: England Become 3rd Country to Lift the World Cup Trophy on Home Soil

England turned out to be just the third team after India and Australia to win the World Cup on their home soil. India had won the 2011 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium while Australia lifted the Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2015.

Sri Lanka, the co-hosts of the 1996 World Cup, had won the title in Pakistan after defeating Australia. On Sunday, England finished a hat-trick for host countries winning the World Cup at Lord's.

England ended the long wait. They achieved the final of the World Cup just because since 1992. In 2015, they were knocked out of the group stages. A few specialists felt this was England's most obvious opportunity with regards to winning the World Cup and the hosts did not disappoint.

England turned into the sixth group after West Indies, India, Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to win the World Cup.

Australia has won the World Cup 5 times while West Indies and India have won the trophy twice each. Pakistan and Sri Lanka won the World Cup once each.

This was the fourth time England were playing the World Cup final. They had lost to West Indies in 1975, Australia in 1987 and Pakistan in 1992.

Talking at the post-match presentation ceremony, England skipper Eoin Morgan said his group has built up a great deal since 2015.

"This has been a 4-year journey.. we've built up significantly over those years, especially the last two.

"To get over the line today means everything to us. The guys in the middle keep us cool, the manner in which they play, the experience.

"It's calming at times. Not a lot between the teams. Just delighted we're lifting the trophy," Morgan said.
