T20 World Cup 2022: Team South Africa had played fantastic cricket in 2021 in the UAE and won 4 out of 5 group games but still could not reach the semifinals. But their performance level was quite unexpected, with credits going to the captain Temba Bavuma.
Bavuma has got top-notch leadership skills that offer confidence to the team to play well in the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup.
“We’ve had a good run in the last year, we've done really well. It was a slow start when Mark Boucher came in but we knew it was going to be because we had to come up with a blueprint and a plan for how we want to go about things,” wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock said to Betway.
In an interview, Bavuma said that he is enjoying captaincy because most of the players have known and played with him at the school level. This helps them understand each other and communicate better.
Bavuma said, “I must say, the journey is still young with the white-ball teams. But I’ve enjoyed it so far. I was fortunate that most of the guys, especially the senior guys, I’ve played with from the school level. We understand each other and, most importantly, the respect is there”.
Temba Bavuma feels that having former middle order batter JP Duminy in the team’s management helped them get a clearer idea of the game. He said, “We’re fortunate that we have several legends of the past who I can call upon, too. JP Duminy was in the T20 management camp and he added to the brains of the team. He has a great brain and I bounced ideas off him. I spend a lot of time with KG (Rabada) on and off the field. Shamo and Quinton, too. These are important players to have good relationships with as a captain”.
According to him, the greatest advantage is when you know yourself better, it assists you to compete in any format of the game. “The better you know yourself, the less likely you are to be affected by what other people say about you. I pride myself in being honest, understanding where I can improve but also not losing focus from taking the team forward.”
He also mentioned that Hashim Amla was never that destructive player in the side, but he brilliantly adapted his performance that spoke for the team in T20.
Undoubtedly, the South African is definitely among the teams to root for in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. They are currently considered fourth favourites with online sportsbook Betway, priced at 15/2 in their T20 World Cup betting markets.
