New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel has accomplished a big feat. He created history by taking 10 wickets in the first innings of the second Test against India being played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He took 4 wickets on the first day of the match and took 6 wickets on the second day on Saturday, trapping the Indian bowlers in the spin. Patel has become the first player to take 10 wickets in a Test innings.
Till now only two bowlers were able to do it. Ajaz Patel's sharpness has revived the memory of two former great bowlers, Jim Laker and former India legend Anil Kumble. Before Patel, only these two players had done the wonders of taking 10 wickets in an innings. England's Laker did this against Australia in 1956. At the same time, India's Kumble achieved this record against Pakistan in 1999. Patel also equaled Kumble's record for the best bowling performance in a Test innings on Indian soil.
Ajaz Patel was born on 21 October 1988 in Mumbai. His family had settled in New Zealand when Ajaz was just 8 years old. When he started cricket, he was a left-arm fast bowler but later he became a spinner after the opinion of the coaches. He made his international debut in October 2018 and played a Test match for New Zealand for the first time by taking 5 wickets in an innings.
In May last year, the New Zealand Cricket Board also gave him a central contract. So far, Ajaz Patel has taken 39 wickets in 19 innings of 11 Test matches. Apart from this, he has also taken 11 wickets while playing 7 T20 International matches. In first-class cricket, Ajaz has taken 251 wickets in 68 matches.
