CWG 2022: It seems like a commanding show by the Indian weightlifters in the Commonwealth Games 2022 as they have secured 9th medal for India in the heavyweight championship.
On Wednesday, Indian heavyweight master Lovepreet Singh won a bronze medal in the 109 kg category with a total lift of 355 kg. It is the 14th medal for the Indian contingent in the Olympics with 5 Gold and Silver each, and 4 Bronze medals.
He set a new national record of 192 kg in clean and jerk while his best score in snatch was recorded at 163 kg.
The gold medal was clinched by Cameroon's Junior Nyabeyeu with a total lift of 361 kg while the Silver was taken by Jack Opeloge of Samoa with a lift of 358 kg.
The 24-year-old weightlifter from Amritsar didn't had any failed attempts during the whole match and thus setting a benchmark for the youngsters.
In the first attempt, he lifted a snatch of 157 kg which seemed quite easy for him. He then went on to increase his score and lifted 161 kg in the second attempt. In the third attempt, he went on to lift the snatch of 163 kg, which terminated his first round in the event being at the 2nd spot.
In the clean and jerk, he first successfully attempted 185 kg which was followed up by a lift of 189 kg, and finally concluded it up with a lift of a record 192 kg.
There were quite some hopes from Lovepreet initially and he stood up to those hopes with a bronze at Birmingham.
With the bronze medal by Lovepreet Singh, India's medal tally in the ongoing commonwealth games increased to 14 with 9 medals alone by the weightlifting contingent.
Indian team has secured 5 Gold medals which include by 3 weightlifters, i.e. Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli.
