The New Zealand team has suffered a major setback ahead of the ODI series against India. New Zealand's Captain Kane Williamson has ruled out of the two-match ODI series due to shoulder injury. Earlier, Indian Team vice-captain Rohit Sharma also ruled out of the New Zealand tour due to calf injury. Right-handed Kane Williamson suffered a shoulder injury during the third match of the 5-match T20 series against India, after which he did not make it to the fourth and fifth T20 matches. At the same time, before the start of the 3-match ODI international series, the New Zealand Cricket Board has confirmed that Kane Williamson will not be part of the team in the first two ODIs against India.

In the absence of regular New Zealand team captain Kane Williamson, fast bowler Tim Southee took command of the team during the fourth and fifth T20I matches, while Tom Latham has been appointed as the captain of the team for the first two matches of the ODI series. Blackcaps i.e. New Zealand Cricket Board has given this information. Tom Latham will be the captain of the host Kiwi team in the first ODI in Hamilton and second ODI in Auckland.

Kane Williamson will be replaced by Tom Latham, who will captain the Kiwi team, while for two ODIs, Mark Champman will replace Williamson. As of March 2018, Mark Champman has played 5 ODIs for the Kiwi team. He has got a place in the team based on his performance in domestic cricket.
