League Game Format Announced, Two Groups of Five

The BCCI announced on Friday that each of the ten IPL teams will compete in 14 league matches (7 home and 7 away). Each team will face the same five teams two times and the remaining teams once.

To that end, the ten clubs have been separated into two digital groups of five, based on a seeding mechanism based on the number of IPL titles won and final appearances.

How Teams Divide into Two Groups?

The two groupings are as follows:

Each team will play twice, once against the players in their group and once against the team in the opposite group in the same row. Each club will play only even against the four remaining teams in the opposite group.

Who Play with Whom?

For example, KKR will face MI, RR, DC, LSG, and SRH twice in the league rounds (the team in the same row in the other group). KKR will only play against CSK, RCB, PBKS, and GT once.

The structure is identical to that of the 2011 edition when the IPL added two new clubs, the Pune Warriors India and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

"The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in a bio-secure environment at a single hub to avoid air travel which is considered as a major threat for the spread of COVID-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the League/matches," The BCCI elaborated.

The location of the playoff matches would be determined later, according to IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel.
