Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma(c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(wk), Hardik Pandya(vc), Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik and Yuzvendra Chahal.
India won the first one-day international match by 67 runs. The top three batters of the men in blue side batted excellently. Rohit and Gill started the innings nicely.
They added 143 runs for the opening wicket and gave a platform for Virat and Co to impose a daunting score for the Lankan Tigers to chase.
It was only Virat Kohli who smashed his 73rd international ton and 45th ODI century, which was also his ninth hundred against Sri Lanka.
But the middle order batters got starts and to increase the run flow, they gave their wickets away. The Sri Lankan bowlers did a decent job of pulling things back because the way the Indian batters were going it looked like they would score close to 400 runs.
India needs their middle-order batters to come good in the next game and also, and they will want their top three batters to continue their blazing form.
Defending 374 runs might look easy, but actually, it was not because of the nature of the pitch. Still, the pacers did a good job.
Umran Malik was awesome as usual in the middle overs and Mohammed Siraj was the one who gave the team the early wickets. He removed Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis early. Siraj also bowled one maiden over.
While Umran Malik got three wickets in the middle overs which never allowed Sri Lanka to run through the game. Shami too bowled well alongside Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal.
The pacers are in good form and the team would want them to stick with that throughout the year, especially with the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is around the corner.
India doesn’t need to make any changes for the next game. But if they want, they can include Washington Sundar in place of Axar Patel.
Which is a like-for-like replacement. Some experts also suggested that Ishan Kishan should walk into the playing XI after his double ton and he can come in for KL Rahul.
Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis(wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga/Maheesh Theekshana, Chamika Karunaratne, Dunith Wellalage/Jeffrey Vandersay, Kasun Rajitha and Dilshan Madushanka.
Dasun Shanaka was the only big positive from the Sri Lankan point of view in the first ODI. The skipper of the Lankan team smashed his second hundred in the one-day international format and that too when the team needed it the most.
It might have come in the losing cause. Still, it was a brilliant effort from him. Shanaka’s knock was a perfect tutorial for his teammates on how to bat in India.
Other than Shanaka’s 108 runs. It was Pathum Nissanka scored 72 runs and Dhananjaya de Sliva scored 47 runs.
The openers and the middle-order batters need to contribute in the next games, which is the only way to win. Sri Lanka can add Ashen Bandara to their playing XI. He could strengthen their batting.
The bowling too was not good and the fielding also needs to improve. Kasun Rajitha made his ODI debut in the last game and picked up three wickets which also included the big wicket of King Kohli.
Shanka also needs to bowl more. He bowled well and gave the first breakthrough. Dasun should bowl with the new ball, which can help the Lankans to start the innings well with the ball.
The visitors can bring back Maheesh Theekshana because Wellalage and Hasaranga went for runs in the first ODI.
They can also bring Vandersay in place of Wellalage and Theekshana in place of Hasaranga. That might make their bowling stronger. However, Sri Lanka will go with a batter short.
Still, that can be a good move because they can restrict a batting powerhouse like India to a decent score.
The pitch at Eden Gardens in Kolkata is also a batter's wicket. The second one-day international match will also be a high-scoring affair.
The bowlers will get a minimum help and that too with the new ball. Once the white cherry gets old, the batters will smash the bowlers all over the park because the boundaries size is also small at this venue.
The climate is good for the second One-Day International game between India and Sri Lanka in Kolkata.
