Ishan Kishan(wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya(c), Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Harshal Patel Yuzvendra Chahal, Umram Malik and Arshdeep Singh.
India will aim to start the new year of 2023 with a win against the Asia Cup T20I champions, Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya will lead this side of the shortest format once again and he hasn’t lost a match in his captaincy stint till now.
Pandya had captained the men in blue side in the T20I series against Ireland and New Zealand before.
This would be the first time where Hardik, the IPL title winner will lead his side in the home series and that too at the Wankhede Stadium which is also a home venue for his previous franchise Mumbai Indians.
Personally as well Hardik had a good 2022. He was amongst the highest run-getter for India in the shortest format. Pandya would certainly want to continue that run in this 2023 year as well.
Suryakumar is the one who had a good last year also. SKY had scored 1164 runs and slammed two centuries that too away from home. Yadav Ji’s first T20I ton came against England and his second ton came in New Zealand.
After such a glorious year in 2022, SKY will want to start the series against SL on a high.
Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad are most likely to open the innings in the first T20I match starting tomorrow. Kishan has been in good form and so is Gaikwad.
Rutu has impressed one and all in the domestic circuit. But in the bowling department, India has not much experience as they have dropped Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was their highest wicket-taker in T20Is in 2022.
Arshdeep Singh was India’s second-highest wicket-taker and Yuzvendra Chahal the third-highest wicket-taker is in the squad for the three-match series against the Lankan Tigers.
However, India will need overs from Hardik Pandya as he is the fast-bowling all-rounder captain. With Yuzi Chahal, Axar Patel or Washington Sundar will fit in the playing eleven of the team.
Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(wk), Charith Asalanka, Avishka Fernando, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara, and Dilshan Madushanka.
Sri Lanka, the Asian T2OI Champions are a good side and India cannot take them lightly even though the Blues are playing this three-match series at home.
The visitors have a dangerous batting line up and most of the Sri Lankan players are experienced in playing in India because of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Indian bowlers need to be aware of Nissanka, Mendis, Asalanka and Rajapaksa. These four top-order batters are dangerous.
Then they also have power hitters like Skipper Shanaka and Hasaranga in the backend of the T20 international innings. Like India, SL also has two quality spinners like Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.
Dasun Shanaka will hold the key for Sri Lanka as the captain and all-rounder of the side. Sri Lanka has done well under him.
Despite losing the first match of the Asia Cup 2022 against Afghanistan by a heavy margin, they still won that title. That was because of their amazing temperament.
SL would certainly want to repeat that kind of performance in this series as they would also be keen to start 2023 with a win.
The pitch at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is a batting-friendly wicket. The batters can clear the short boundaries and the venue is a high-scoring one.
There will be a dew factor as well to worsen the case for the bowlers. Still, the pacers might be helped by the early movement from the wicket. Win the toss and batting first would be a better option.
The climate in Mumbai is a bit cold and chilly. Still, there are no signs of rain yet and we can get the full match tomorrow i.e. Jan 03.
