Australia is searching for their new captain in the One-Day International cricket format after Aaron Finch recently bid farewell to the fifty-overs format.

Finch will be playing the shortest format and lead the side for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Finch has been named as the skipper of the T20 International side, which will take on India in a three-match series from Tuesday, 20th September 2022.

Aaron Finch’s Overall ODI stats -

Aaron Finch retired after a whitewash series win against New Zealand. The Aussies won the three-match One-Day International series by a margin of 3-0 against the Kiwis.

The former ODI skipper has amassed 5406 runs from 146 fifty overs matches and 142 innings. He has smashed 30 half-centuries and 17 centuries with an average of 38.89 and a strike rate of 86.72.

Captaincy Stats of Aaron Finch in One-Day International Format -

As a captain of Australia's One-Day International format, Aaron Finch has scored 2105 runs in 66 matches and 55 innings. He is in the top five list of highest run scorers of Australia as the leader of One-Day International matches.

Finch had slammed six centuries and 13 half centuries in the fifty overs format as the skipper. As the ODI skipper, he had an average of 39.71 and a strike rate of 83.83.

After Finch retired from the traditional ODI format, Australia is searching for their new skipper.

Today we shall list the five players who can be the future captain of the Aussie team in the One-Day International format, especially when the 2023 fifty-overs world cup is around the corner. That ICC mega event will be played in India.

Australian Cricket Board might lift Captaincy ban from David Warner –

The dashing opener from the Australian cricket team, David Warner is a front runner for the vacant ODI captaincy slot.

According to the reports, Cricket Australia (CA) is thinking to lift the captaincy ban on David Warner. The opener was caught in a Sandpaper controversy in South Africa, and due to that, the Australian cricket board had banned Warner from the captaincy responsibility.

Even Aaron Finch wants David Warner as the next captain of Australia in the ODI cricket format. Warner has previous experience of captaining the side.

He was the skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. In the 2016 IPL season SRH won their maiden title under David Warner's leadership.

Warner had captained Australia in just three ODI matches before and scored 135 runs with one century.

David has a hundred per cent record in ODIs. He has won all three matches as a captain till now.

Steve Smith is already the vice-captain in the red ball format of Australia –

After the Sandpaper saga, he was removed from the captaincy duties and served a ban for one year. Now Smith is given the responsibility of the deputy in Test match cricket. He can be considered for this role.

Steve also led the team when Pat Cummins wasn't part of a Test match in 2021 against England. He had captained the ODI side for 51 matches and scored 1984 runs with five centuries and 12 half centuries.

In those 51 games, Smith has won 25 ODI matches for the Baggy Green Side. Australia can go with an experienced leader in Steve Smith instead of trying someone new.

Maxi is go-to man for Australia in limited overs format –

Glenn Maxwell is a go-to man for Australia in the 50 overs and shortest format. The spin bowling all-rounder is the key member of Australia's success.

Maxi has experience in captaining the team. He was the skipper of Kings XI Punjab in the IPL. But he is yet to captain an ODI side at the international level.

If the Australian Cricket Board (CA) wants to groom a new player as their captain, they can go with Maxwell and prepare him for the ICC World Cup in 2023 in India.

Maxwell can be a handy player because he has all-around skills. He is a terrific batter and a brilliant spin bowler who can give break troughs in the middle overs.

Can Pat Cummins also relish the ODI captaincy with Test matches?

The star pace bowler Pat Cummins is the current Test skipper of the Australian Cricket Team. He has replaced Tim Paine in the red ball format. Cummins is just the second bowling captain for Australia in the last sixty-five years.

Pat has done well as the Test skipper of the Aussie team. He had won the Ashes Test series against England and drew the Test match in Sri Lanka.

But before making Cummins the skipper of the ODI format, the Australian Cricket Board should think can Cummins relish captaining the ODI side along with the red ball format?

Pat is a star bowler for the Baggy Green across the formats, and they will not want to put pressure of the captaincy of the fifty-over format. Experts are also not in favour of Cummins being the all-format captain of the Aussie team.

Mitchell Starc – Another Option as the ODI Skipper

Another pace bowler can be in the fray of captaining the fifty-overs format for Australia. Mitchell Starc is a fiery pace bowler across the formats for the Aussies, and he is also an experienced player.

Starc is the spearhead of Australia's pace bowling attack and is divesting the opposition with the new ball. No one in the world could generate accurate swing and seam with the new ball as Starc.

But his fitness is a big issue, and like all the fast bowlers, Mitchell Starc is prone to injuries. That might not allow the lethal pace bowler to be the captain of Australia’s ODI side because the captain should be fit and ready for all games.

If Starc manages his fitness, the Australian Cricket Board can find him as another option for this role.
