The Aston Martin Formula One team announced on Monday, August 1 that two-time champion Fernando Alonso will join them for the 2023 season after signing a multi-year contract. Alonso will join Aston Martin as Sebastian Vettel's successor after the latter announced his retirement last month.

Alonso joins Aston Martin from Alpine, owned by Renault

Alonso joins Aston Martin from Alpine, which is owned by Renault. Vettel, a four-time champion, has already stated that he will retire at the end of the current season.

Notably, Vettel chose Mick Schumacher as his replacement at Aston Martin, even though the choice was made by the team owners.

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri, the Formula Two winner from last year, is expected to assume Alonso's seat at Alpine. Piastri has been the reserve driver and will be the starting driver next season.

Alpine is fourth in the 10-team championship

"I still have the passion and ambition to battle to be at the front, and I want to be part of an organization that is devoted to learning, developing, and succeeding," Alonso said in a statement released by Aston Martin.

"The enthusiasm and determination to succeed that I have observed convince me to continue to appreciate and devote to the sport. I want to win again in this sport, therefore I have to seize the possibilities that present themselves to me."

Alpine is fourth in the 10-team championship, while Aston Martin, headquartered in Silverstone, is ninth in the F1 2022 season.
