3 Best Opening Partnerships in ODIs for India
3 Best Opening Partnerships in ODIs For India: The opening stand is the pinnacle in cricket and that too in all three formats of the game.
The openers are the ones who provide the momentum in the match so that the team could score big in their allotted fifty overs or chase a target quite easily in the end.
In ODI Cricket, the openers need to play out the powerplay overs without losing any wickets and also negotiate the new ball.
If they do that then the openers have a good job and now it’s the turn of the middle order and the lower order batters to carry the momentum forward.
The men in blue have done well in the fifty overs format since the 2019 world cup, which was played in England and they have been successful in that top-order position.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have done well in the recently concluded one-day international series against New Zealand, which India won by a margin of 3-0.
In the last one-day international match which was played at India’s fortress Holkar Stadium in Indore, the Indian openers had shared a partnership of 212 runs and both the openers scored their centuries. Rohit scored 101 runs while Gill score a fine 112 runs.
Today we shall name the three opening partners of the Indian cricket team who have done well for the team in the fifty-overs format in that crucial position.
1. Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly
These two players will remain as the most favourite pairs in the one-day international cricket format. Sachi and Sourav gave the Indian fans many moments and unforgettable memories for a lifetime.
These two Indian openers will also remain the most successful opening pairs in the fifty-overs format.
Sachin and Sourav played between the era of 1996 to 2007, and they shared 26 centuries opening partnerships in ODIs, which is the most in the fifty overs format.
These two opening partners have scored 8227 runs in just 176 innings, and 258 runs are the highest opening partnership. They also have shared 29 fifty-run partnerships.
2. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma
The 2nd Best opening pair for India after Sachin and Sourav is Shikhar and Rohit. These two opening pairs did well for India.
But now the Men in Blue side have more options in the form of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan at the top order, especially in the fifty overs cricket.
Gill and Kishan have scored a double ton each to cement their place in the squad of the fifty overs format.
Rohit Sharma used to bat in the middle order when he started playing for India. But he wasn't consistent at that position. MS Dhoni allowed Rohit to open, and his career changed from that point.
Dhawan was a seasoned opener, and he will continue to be so. These two openers have batted for 113 matches from 2011 to 2022, and they have scored 5039 runs with 17 centuries and 15 half-centuries stand at the opening position. Their highest stand was 210 runs.
3. Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar
Team India did well in the One-Day International match whenever their openers had built a strong foundation. Viru and Sachin did a wonderful job as the openers of the Indian Cricket Team.
They have played in 93 ODI Innings from 2002 to 2012, and in that, Sachin and Viru shared a partnership of 3919 runs with 12 hundred-run stands and 18 fifty-run partnerships.
Their highest score as the ODI opening partners was 182 runs.
