Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) won the general election amid coronavirus crises. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's party won 83 out of 93 seats. However, the opposition party makes a historic gain with 10 seats win. After the results were announced, Loong said, "I will use this mandate to deal with the epidemic and improve the economy. The people of Singapore trusted me and the party, I am proud of it."

On the other hand, the opposition Workers Party won 10 seats. This is the highest number of seats won by any party in the country so far. The party contested this election under the leadership of General Secretary Pritam Singh. He will now be the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. His party got four seats more than in 2015.

PAP has been in power since 1965:

The PAP has been in power in Singapore since 1965. This time it got 61.24 percent votes. This is 8.7 percent less than the 2015 elections. Prime Minister Loong's party received 69.9 percent of the vote in the last elections. Loong is the Prime Minister of Singapore since 2004. He is the son of the former PM Lee Kuan Yew.

11 parties contested in the elections:

Eleven parties, including the People's Action Party (PAP), contested the general elections. The PAP did not give tickets to any Indian-origin candidate in this election. However, the opposition parties fielded 12 such candidates. The election campaign was going on for the last 9 days. The government had prohibited holding rallies and public meetings during campaigning.

Safety taken care of during voting:

Voting for the parliamentary election took place on Friday. During this time security measures were taken care of. People came to the polling booths wearing masks on their mouths and gloves in hand. Voting began at eight in the morning. Voting was to take place by eight o'clock in the first night, but later its time was extended by two hours.
