Shikhar Dhawan under Pressure to Retain his Place in Team: Gautam Gambhir

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has returned in the T20 series against Sri Lanka after an injury. He is currently opening the innings with KL Rahul as Rohit Sharma is given rest for this series. Rahul is in excellent form right now and his pairing with Rohit is doing well. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir believes that Shikhar Dhawan is currently under pressure to retain his place in the Indian team, as Lokesh Rahul is doing well as an opener.

Dhawan is returning after being out of team for two months due to knee injury. He scored 32 off 30 balls in the second T20 against Sri Lanka in Indore on Tuesday, while Rahul smashed 45 off 32-ball to help India reach a comfortable 143-run target. Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain and opener of the series, has been given rest in this series.

Gambhir said, 'Rahul is in excellent form. Whenever I see Rahul batting, It amaze me every time why he does not play the same way in Test cricket. Considering the ability he possesses, it seems that he can score 100 runs in 50 balls even in Test cricket. The kind of shots he has, they are fantastic.' He indirectly suggested that Rahul would prove to be better for Rohit as an opening pair. Gambhir said, "Dhawan's batting has fallen, but it is good that he scored some runs. It will help when he comes out to bat in the next match. Had he got out early, the pressure would have been more."
