SC Extends Limitation Period for Filing Appeals due to Covid Surge

In view of the surge in COVID-19 cases and an "alarming situation" faced by the litigants, the Supreme Court on Tuesday in its interim order extended the limitation period for filing the appeals under all Central and State laws till further orders.

The order was passed by a three-judge bench of the Apex Court, headed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian. As per a media release, the Supreme Court Advocates On Records Association (SCAORA) had recently filed an application before the Supreme Court seeking its direction and restoration of the extension of the limitation period due to the second wave of COVID-19 as the litigants face an alarming situation.

Over 3.23 lakh cases reported in India:

Earlier, the Supreme Court had decided to wave off the extension of the limitation period for filing appeals in March last year. Meanwhile, India reported 3.23 lakh fresh coronavirus cases and over 2,700 related deaths in the last 24 hours. A total of 3,23,144 new COVID-19 cases, 2771 related deaths and 2,51,827 recoveries were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total active cases to 28,82,204, as per the health ministry update on Tuesday morning.

The total count of positive cases now stands at 1,76,36,307, including 1,97,894 deaths and 1,45,56,209 recoveries. As many as 28,09,79,877 samples tested for COVID-19 up to April 26, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed. Of these 16,58,700 samples tested on Monday. The total doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered stand at 14,52,71,186. On Tuesday, Maharashtra reported 48,700  new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, 71,736 patients recovered and 524 died. So far, 43.43 lakh people affected by the epidemic in the state.
