Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (53 kg) has won the gold medal in Rome Ranking Series Wrestling Championship. Asian Games champion Vinesh Phogat defeated Ecuador's Luisa Elizabeth Melendre to win the final of this tournament. With this, Vinesh Phogat has also won the first gold medal of the year 2020. Vinesh reached the final after defeating China's Pang Qianyu 4-2 in the semi-finals. Indian wrestlers Sunil Kumar and Anshu Malik (57 kg) has won two silvers in this tournament so far.

Vinesh won her matches against Khrystyna Bereza (10-0) and Lannuan Luo (15-5) by technical superiority. Vinesh won the 'double leg' attack against Bereja. At the same time, the victory over Luo was very difficult. Luo was a strong opponent who led 5–2 after the first period but Vinesh scored points in the second period with some clever effort. Twice she threw Luo with moves from between the legs when Luo was holding her from the back.

However, she lost to Nigeria's Odunayo Adekuoroye in the gold medal match with technical proficiency. The 18-year-old Indian wrestler dominated until she reached the finals in which she defeated America's Jenna Ross Burkart, Norway's Grace Bullen and Canada's 2019 World Champion Linda Morais.
