Women working in shops in Tamil Nadu have got the right to sit. Earlier, only retail employees in Kerala had got the right to sit. In this regard, the law of the 'Right To Sit' for employees has been implemented in Kerala only last month. Let us know what is 'Right to Sit' law? What problems did women face due to not getting the 'right to sit'? What will be the benefit of the implementation of this law?

What is 'Right-to-Sit'?

Right to sit means working while sitting somewhere at the workplace. Employees working in many work areas of the country, especially in shops, do not have the right to sit. During work, they have to work by standing during their working hours. Legislation has been implemented in two states to give moral 'right to sit' for such employees.

Why did the law come?

Actually, in Tamil Nadu, the employees working in any shop like textile, and jewelry shops did not get the facility to sit. The shop staff had to stand and communicate with the customers. In such a situation, the employees have to work continuously by standing for 10 to 12 hours. It is physically and mentally difficult for the employees to stand continuously during this time.

Women have to face more trouble due to such rules. Not only this, in some places they do not even get toilet breaks. Tamil Nadu employees had raised their voice about all these problems, after which the Tamil Nadu government took a big decision and made a law giving the 'right to sit' to the employees working in shops in the state and it was implemented with immediate effect.

There were problems like pain in his legs, back pain, as well as it became very difficult to stand for hours during periods. In such a situation, women had to face physical problems as well as mental problems. Now, women will be allowed to sit.

Right to sit in these two states…

Before the Tamil Nadu government, Kerala was the first and only state, which had enacted a law for the right of employees to sit in its state. A similar law was implemented in Kerala in 2018. At that time a person named P Viji, a tailor by profession started the movement for the right of the employees to sit. He said that people working as assistants in shops, especially women, should be allowed to sit for work.
