A rare autoimmune disorder called 'cold agglutinin' has been reported in a 12-year-old in Canada. The tongue of the child struggling with this has turned yellow due to an autoimmune disorder. Also, Doctors say, in this disease, the immune system that protects against diseases starts attacking the body and starts destroying red blood cells. This disease can be caused by Epstein-Barr virus infection.
According to a report published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the child was admitted to a hospital in Canada with a sore throat, yellow urine, abdominal pain, and yellowing of the skin. According to doctors, when the child was brought to the hospital, there was a possibility of jaundice.
After examination, it was found that Epstein-Barr virus infection was also accompanied by anemia in the child. However, Epstein-Barr is a virus that usually infects children. With the help of blood transfusion and steroids, the uncontrollable immune system was controlled in the patient for about 7 weeks. The child is now completely healthy and the color of the tongue has also become normal.
Cases of cold agglutinin disease occur after a patient has been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. According to the National Institutes of Health, in such a condition, red blood cells in the body begin to get damaged and a chemical called bilirubin starts to form. Due to this chemical, the skin and tongue turn yellow.
This virus spreads through saliva and directly attacks the immune system. Symptoms such as fatigue, sudden fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, swelling of the throat, skin rash, and weakness are seen in the infected patient.
Its treatment is possible. The patient's condition starts improving within 2 to 4 weeks after the start of treatment. The patient has to take care of many things along with the medicines.
