On Monday, the Sensex gained 21 points to close at 40,345.08 in the domestic stock market. While the Nifty closed up 11 points at 11,913.45 after a day's trading. Bank Nifty closed 1.31 per cent higher by 1.27 per cent on the basis of buying in banking shares. The Nifty PSU bank index closed up 1.17 percent and the private bank index gained 1.38 percent. During the trading, there was a sharp purchase in shares of government companies on Monday.

Earlier, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) 30-share index Sensex opened at 40,216.50, down 7.11 points at nine in the morning and rose to 40,385.61 while dropping to 40,192.81 during early trading. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) 50-share sensitive index Nifty also opened at 11,879.20 with weakness.
