Punjab: Resolution Passed in the Assembly rejecting Centre’s order on BSF Jurisdiction

On Thursday, the second day of the special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, a resolution was passed unanimously in the House against the decision of the Central Government to increase the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF). In this proposal, it has been said to cancel the decision of the Central Government. However, there was a lot of uproar in the assembly regarding this matter. In this uproar, Congress state president Navjot Singh Sidhu and Bikram Singh Majithia were seen face to face. Sidhu raised the question in the House that why Sukhbir Singh Badal did not come to attend the all-party meeting.

Decision of the central government is being opposed from the very beginning

After the proceedings of the House began in the Punjab Assembly on Thursday, the Deputy CM and Home Minister of the state Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa moved a resolution against the decision of the Central Government of 11 October 2021, through which the powers of the Border Security Force were increased in Punjab. Before this decision of the Center, the Border Security Force could continue its activities within about 15 km from the International Border, but with the new decision of the Central Government, their range was increased to 50 km. However, this decision of the central government is being opposed from the very beginning.

Central government should have consulted the Punjab government

Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, in his address after presenting the protest motion before the House in the Assembly, said that the decision to increase the jurisdiction of Punjab from 15 km to 50 km is a distrust of the people of Punjab and Punjab Police. It's an insult to them too. The central government should have consulted the Punjab government before taking such a big decision. However, the law and order situation in Punjab is strong and there is no need to expand the BSF's jurisdiction. This is a violation of the spirit of the federal structure of the Indian Constitution.

Jurisdiction of the BSF reflects the narrow policy of the central government

He said that expanding the jurisdiction of the BSF reflects the narrow policy of the central government. All the political parties of Punjab unanimously condemned this action of the Central Government and demanded the Central Government to immediately withdraw the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 11 October 2021.
