India abstained from voting in the United Nations Human Rights Council against Sri Lanka on a resolution citing 'violation of human rights'. According to the news agency Reuters, 22 countries voted in support of the proposal. 11 countries, including China and Pakistan, gave their votes in protest and 14 countries including India remained absent from voting.

Before voting, India issued a statement saying, "India takes care of two main issues related to human rights in Sri Lanka. The first is our support and equality for the Tamil community, dignity, peace and justice. Second, the unity, stability and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka." "We feel that these two issues go along with each other and Sri Lanka's progress will be ensured by taking care of both the issues."

"We will ask the Sri Lankan government to move towards reconciliation and pay attention to the expectations of the Tamil community and work together with the international community to ensure that people's freedom and human rights are protected."

Three days ago, opposition leader P Chidambaram had said on Saturday that India should vote in favor of the resolution.

He wrote on Twitter, "It is sad that Sri Lanka is denying that human rights have been violated in that country before and still, especially for the people of Tamil community." DMK's MK Stalin also appealed to vote in favor of the proposal.

What did China and Pakistan say?

The Chinese government spokesman said that they do not want to interfere in the internal affairs of any country with such a proposal. That's why he does not support this proposal. He also demanded other countries to vote against the proposal. China said that the Sri Lankan government is working for peace and stability.

Pakistan, however, said that the proposal "does not talk about human rights violations done by the LTTE, which is an international terrorist organization". The Pakistan spokesman said that the proposal does not even talk about the steps of the Sri Lankan government against the LTTE. He mentioned that the Muslims killed due to Corona were not given burial but praised the government's permission.

Why was India hesitating?

India and Sri Lanka signed an agreement to develop the Port of Columbia together. But in early February, Sri Lanka pulled out of the deal. India is trying to compromise again. Both the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE are accused of human rights violations. In the war between the two, more than one lakh people lost their lives. During the last phase of the war, the LTTE of the Sri Lankan government had ended, in which around 40,000 people were killed. Thousands of people were never revealed.

It is alleged that the Tamil people, who surrendered, were taken captive by the Sri Lankan government. Since then Tamil families have been demanding justice. But the Sri Lankan government has been denying that it is behind the disappearance of the Tamil people.
