Thousands of protesters took out a rally against China's new National Security Law on Wednesday in Hong Kong as the city marked 23 years since its handover from British to Chinese rule. Britain handed over Hong Kong to China in 1997:

On July 1, 1997, Britain handed over Hong Kong to China. On Wednesday, the protesters demanded independence and opposed the new law. After that, Britain has decided to grant British citizenship to the people of Hong Kong but with conditions. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed this.

Johnson further said China is violating the Sino-British joint manifesto. It clearly stated that the rules of the autonomous region would remain in force in Hong Kong for 50 years. On the other hand, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says that China is taking away the freedom of the people of Hong Kong.

'Sad day' for the people of Hong Kong: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Tuesday about the new national security law enacted by China that it was a 'sad day' for people in Hong Kong. Let us tell you that China's national security law came into effect in Hong Kong on Tuesday and the powers of Chinese authorities to broadly investigate, prosecute and punish were further broadened. According to a law approved by Chinese President Xi Jinping, alienation, sabotage, terrorism and collusion with foreign powers will be criminalized. Those convicted in such crimes can face life imprisonment in prison.

Hong Kong's independence in danger:

China's parliament on Tuesday passed the disputed National Security Act amid worldwide outrage against this law, including Hong Kong. Many countries including US, Australia and Britain have opposed the law. China is said to be implementing this law to strengthen its hold over Hong Kong. Critics say that Hong Kong's independence from the law would be jeopardized.
