Hallmarking of gold jewelry has become mandatory from 15th June i.e. today. The government had made hallmarking mandatory for gold jewelry and designs in November 2019. For this, all the jewelers in the country were given more than one year to shift to hallmarking and get registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Later, the jewelers demanded an extension of this deadline. In view of this, the deadline was changed to 15 January, 1 June and later on 15 June. In such a situation, there are questions in the minds of many people that what will happen to the old gold kept across them. Today we are telling you about hallmarking and things related to it.

First of all, understand what is hallmarking?

Hallmark is a government guarantee. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the only agency in India to hallmark. In hallmarking, a product is certified on certain parameters. BIS is the body that examines the gold being provided to the customers. It is necessary to put the BIS logo with the hallmark on the gold coin or jewelry. This shows that its purity has been tested in a BIS licensed lab.

What happens if you have gold without hallmarking?

Even after June 15, 2021, gold without hallmarking can be exchanged. Apart from this, if you want, you can get your gold hallmarked through your jeweler. According to Sanjay Mandot, knowledgeable in the matter, BIS gives this license to jewelers by charging a license fee of Rs 11,250 for 5 years. The jewelers then get the jewelry checked at the hallmark center and issue the hallmark according to the carat.

A common man cannot get hallmarked on old jewelry by going to the center directly. They have to come through the respective jeweler only. However, he can get the purity of gold checked at the center by paying a minimum amount.

Gold hallmarking will be done like this from BIS

Jewelry more than 2 grams will have to be checked from a BIS recognized center and get the BIS mark of the concerned carat on it. The jewelry will have a triangular mark of BIS, the logo of the hallmarking center, purity of gold. Also, when the jewelry was made, its year and the jeweler's logo will also be there.

Hallmarking will be done only on 14, 18, and 22-carat jewelry

14 karat gold jewelry – contains 58.50% gold.
18-carat gold jewelry- it contains 75% gold.
22-carat gold jewelry contains 91.60% gold.
