Australian tennis players Alex de Minaur and Nick Kyrgios together defeated the British pair of Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury in a decisive doubles match to take Australia to the semi-finals of the ATP Cup tennis tournament. The Australian team defeated Britain 2–1.
Australian captain Layton Hewitt gambled for both singles players in doubles, and both won the tie-breaker 3–6, 6–3, 18–16 over the experienced British pair. Kyrgios defeated Cameron Norrie 6–2, 6–2 in the opening singles match but De Minaur lost to Dan Evans in a three-hour, 23-minute singles match by 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. The Australian team will now take on the winner of quarter-final between Spain and Belgium on Friday. Australia did not lose a single match in the group stage and went 3–0 in Group-F and made it to the play-offs in Sydney. Britain topped Group-C in Sydney with a 2–1 record.
Two-time Grand Slam winner Garbine Muguruza entered the semi-finals of the Schengen Open on Thursday as part of preparations for the Australian Open. The former Spain number one and currently ranked 35 in the current rankings, defeated Kazakhstan's Zarina Dias 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to secure a place in the final four. This is her first semi-final appearance since winning the title in Mexico last year. The 26-year-old will now face the winner of the match between Russia's Katrina Alexandrova and China's Wang Qiang.
