“New Mass Movement” wants PM Modi

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for starting a 'new mass movement' against plastic being used. He said in 'Mann Ki Baat' that when the country is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the President, on such a auspicious occasion  'We will start a new mass movement against plastic.' Plastic pollution is currently a global problem. The environmental damage caused by plastics has been the subject of international research and government reports for years. It shows that 75 percent of the plastic produced worldwide becomes its waste and about 87 percent of it is found in the environment.

Every person swallows on an average of five grams of plastic. The study by Australia's University of Newcastle has been published this year by the World Wildlife Foundation. It states that " an average person swallows five grams of plastic a week. That is, this harmful thing is reaching his body through some medium".  According to the study, more than one-third of plastic waste is found in nature, especially in water which is the biggest source of plastic transport in the body. According to the study, India ranks third in the case of plastic fiber found in tap water. Plastic fiber up to 82.4 percent is found here, which means four plastic fibers per 500 ml.

CPCB's shocking report

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report assessing adherence to plastic waste management regulations in India was last published for 2017-18. In 2018 its rules were amended. In 2017-18, only 14 states and union territories submitted their annual reports to the CPCB. Out of these 14, 2.06 lakh tonnes of plastic waste is generated every year in Uttar Pradesh. It also had 16 unregistered units of plastic manufacturing and recycling. At the same time, 2.69 lakh tonnes of plastic waste per year was generated in Gujarat.
