Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad, Kerala, on August 10. The Prime Minister will conduct an aerial survey of the devastation, which has claimed the lives of over 400 people.
On July 30, 2024, a landslide occurred in Kerala's Wayanad district due to heavy rainfall. So far, 420 deaths have been confirmed, and 150 people are reported missing.
Additionally, at least 273 people have sustained injuries. A special team of Army personnel, SOG officers, and forest officials is conducting a search operation in the Sunrise Valley inside the forest at Soochipara.
After a ten-day-long rescue mission that began after July 30, the Indian Army is preparing to return from Wayanad. It is expected that the Army will hand over the rescue operations to the NDRF, SDRF, Fire Force, and Kerala Police.
ISRO's analysis reveals that the landslide covered an area of 86,000 square metres, spanning an 8-kilometre radius.
Addressing a press conference, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the state has requested the Central Government to declare this devastation as a national disaster and a severe calamity.
CM Vijayan mentioned that so far, post-mortems have been conducted on 420 bodies, and search and rescue operations are ongoing in Wayanad.
Announcing the Prime Minister's visit to the landslide-affected areas, the Chief Minister expressed hope for central assistance for rehabilitation.
Pinarayi Vijayan said, "The Central Government has appointed a nine-member committee to submit a report in this regard. The committee's chairman visited today, and we are hopeful of receiving central assistance for rehabilitation."
He added, "We hope that the Prime Minister will understand the situation firsthand and adopt a favorable stance."
