Shabbir Ahmed Siddiqui, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad, has condemned the participation of Muslim women in politics amid Gujarat assembly elections. He said that giving election tickets to Muslim women is a rebellion against Islam.

By this they are trying to weaken the religion. Speaking to reporters, Shahi Imam Shabbir Ahmed Siddiqui said women are not allowed to offer namaz as they have a certain status in Islam.

If women were allowed to make public appearances like this, they would not have been banned from the mosque.

The Muslim leaders of Deoband got enraged on this statement. Criticizing Siddiqui, Rao Musharraf Ali, Deband convenor of the Muslim Rashtriya Manch, said, "In Islam, women are not prohibited from going to the mosque. Muslim women themselves have stopped going to the mosque because the imams of the mosques molest them and their disciples try to rape them.”
