Background of Kargil War

In 1999, the Kargil War erupted between India and Pakistan in the region of Kargil, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The conflict was sparked by the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers disguised as Kashmiri militants into Indian territory, specifically targeting areas along the Line of Control (LOC). The Line of Control is the de facto border that divides the two countries in the disputed region of Kashmir.

The intrusion came as a shocking surprise to India, which was not expecting an open conflict in such difficult terrain and high altitudes. The Indian Army quickly realized the gravity of the situation and launched "Operation Vijay" to evict the Pakistani forces and regain control of the occupied regions.
