India and Russia on Monday signed a major deal on arms manufacturing, further strengthening their defence cooperation. A Kalashnikov deal worth Rs 5,200 crore was signed between the two countries.

India and Russia on Monday signed a major deal on arms manufacturing, further strengthening their defence cooperation. A Kalashnikov deal worth Rs 5,200 crore was signed between the two countries. Under this deal, about 6 lakh AK 203 rifles will be manufactured in India. The deal was signed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu. Speaking on the occasion, Rajnath Singh said defence agreements between India and Russia have progressed in an unprecedented manner in recent years.

'2+2' talks with Russian counterparts

The Defense Minister expressed the hope that Russia will, as always, continue to be a key ally of India in challenging circumstances. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Rajnath Singh had 2+2 talks with their Russian counterparts Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Shoygu. Russian President Vladimir Putin is also going to reach India. It is understood that Putin will hand over a model of the air defence missile S-400.

Afghanistan was also discussed in the meeting

In conversation with the Russian delegation, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the situation in Afghanistan will have implications for the entire region including Central Asia. There is another aspect of maritime security concern. "India and Russia share common interests in ASEAN and ASEAN-related forums," he said. Shoygu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived here on Sunday night to initiate '2+2' talks with their Indian counterparts. After these '2+2' talks, the two ministers will participate in the summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day, along with President Vladimir Putin.

India-Russia relations have come true on time: Rajnath

Rajnath Singh said that the relations between India and Russia have come true on time. This relationship is based on the shared interests of global peace, prosperity, mutual trust and understanding and multilateralism. Appreciating Russia's ally, the Defense Minister said that the close cooperation of the two countries is not against any country. Singh said cooperation between the two countries would bring peace and prosperity to the entire region.
