Nipen Das, the superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam, was arrested on Friday (March 8). He is accused of aiding Khalistani organization sympathizer Amritpal Singh and his associates.
According to news agency PTI, an official stated that the jail officer was arrested on charges of "negligence" and is currently in custody at the Dibrugarh Sadar police station.
Let us tell you that several electronic devices were confiscated from the cells of Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam last month.
The seizure included a SIM card, a smartphone, a basic phone, a TV remote with a keyboard, a spy pen camera, a pen drive, Bluetooth headphones, and a speaker, among other electronic devices.
It was revealed that the arrest of the Dibrugarh jail officer was made in connection with this incident. Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh had previously stated that additional CCTV cameras have been installed in the public areas of the NSA block after receiving information about unauthorized activities.
He mentioned in a post on the social media platform 'X' that further legal action is being taken to prevent such incidents in the future, and precautionary measures are being implemented.
Amritpal Singh, the chief of the Khalistani support organization 'Waris Punjab De', along with 10 of its members, are incarcerated in Dibrugarh Jail.
These individuals were apprehended under the NSA Act from various parts of Punjab during actions against this extremist group, and they have been held in this jail since last year.
Since the transfer of members of the extremist group from Punjab to Dibrugarh Jail, the prison has witnessed intensified security measures.
Additional CCTV cameras were installed, and faulty cameras were repaired or replaced. Dibrugarh Jail, one of the oldest and highest-security prisons in Northeast India, was constructed during British rule in 1859-60.
