Radio is the technology of signaling and communicating using radio waves. Radio waves are electromagnetic waves of frequency between 30 hertz and 300 gigahertz. They are generated by an electronic device called a transmitter connected to an antenna that radiates the waves and received by a radio receiver connected to another antenna. Radio is widely used from long ago and in modern times.

Today on this day, India,s first-ever radio Broadcast All India Radio (AIR) popularly called Akashvani went on air from Bombay. The first radio news in the world was broadcasted on August 31, 1920, by station 8MK in Detroit, Michigan.

All India Radio (AIR), officially known as Akashvani since 1956, is the national public radio broadcaster of India and is a vertical of Prasar Bharati. It was established in 1936. It is Doordarshan's, (an Indian television broadcaster) sister service. Which has headquarters in the Akashvani Bhavan building in New Delhi, it houses the Drama Section, the FM Section, the National Service, and is also home to the Indian Doordarshan Kendra, (Delhi).

All India Radio is the largest radio network in the world, and is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world, in terms of number of languages broadcast and spectrum of socio- economic and cultural diversity. It reaches nearly 92% of the country's total area and 99.19% of the total population.  AIR emanates programming in 23 languages and 179 dialects of India. It is truly doing justice of its motto – Bahujan Hitaya, Bahujan Sukhaya meaning "for the happiness of the many, for the welfare of the many".

Meaning of Akashvani

Ākāśavānī or Akashvani (आकाशवाणी) is a Sanskrit word meaning 'celestial announcement' or the 'voice from the sky/heaven'. In Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism, Akashvanis are often featured in stories as a medium of communication from heaven to mankind.

'Akashvani' was first used in the context of radio by M. V. Gopalaswami in 1936 after setting up India's first private radio station in his residence, "Vittal Vihar". Akashvani was later adopted as All India Radio's on-air name in 1957.

On the occasion, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted and extended wishes for all the people.
