Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his government resigned on Monday after just 17 months in office. He submitted his resignation to the King of Malaysia on Monday. Yassin's tumultuous period in office came to an end after allies withdrew support. Science Minister Khairy Jamaluddin on Instagram informed that the entire cabinet has submitted the resignation to the king.

Earlier, Muhyiddin Yassin met the Malaysian King (Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah) in the palace. He resigned soon after the meeting on Monday. Due to this development, a major political crisis has arisen in the country battling serious coronavirus outbreak. Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri has also started gathering support.

Malaysia battling serious coronavirus outbreak:

At present, Malaysia is one of the countries with the highest infection rate in the world. The daily cases of infection have crossed 20,000-mark. The lockdown has been in place since June contain the spread of infection. According to the report, Muhyiddin's government was running on the lowest level majority. This government fell after the single largest party in the coalition withdrew support from more than 12 MPs.

Two ministers from the United Malay National Organization also resigned. According to Malaysia's constitution, the prime minister who loses majority support has to resign. Reports say that Malaysia may soon appoint a new leader. The largest opposition coalition has named its leader Anwar Ibrahim as the PM. However, this coalition of three parties has only 90 MPs. At the same time, 111 MPs are needed to form the government in the country.
