Mumbai Crime Branch Arrested by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB)

A police inspector attached with Mumbai Crime Branch was caught accepting Rs 22 lakh

Mumbai Crime Branch has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for accepting Rs 22 lakh in cash from a liquor shop owner. In a Bollywood-esque turn of events, ACB officers chased Anand Bhoir (43) in an auto-rickshaw in broad daylight in the crowded Andheri East.

According to ACB officers, Bhoir was investigating a case of liquor seizure. While some of the accused were arrested earlier, Bhoir allegedly threatened a liquor shop owner (name withheld as he is a complainant in the ACB case against Bhoir), saying that an FIR will be filed against him and his brother and demanded a bribe of Rs 25 lakh. As the deal was being negotiated, the liquor shop owner approached the ACB. On December 31, the two parties agreed upon Rs 22 lakh.

On January 1, Bhoir called the shop owner outside Andheri police station near the railway station at 3 pm. As the shop owner reached near Andheri police station in his car, Bhoir was waiting for him. The ACB sleuths had already marked the notes and waited for Bhoir to show up.

Bhoir, however, came and asked the shop owner to come to his car, which was parked a little ahead.

The ACB sleuths had to leave their car at the spot and follow Bhoir, who was walking. Bhoir had parked his Innova car outside a Ganpati temple. Once the two were inside the car, Bhoir accepted the cash. As the ACB sleuths approached him, Bhoir started the engine of his car and tried to flee. Since the ACB officials did not have their car, they stopped an auto-rickshaw and intercepted Bhoir's car near the Western Express Highway.

While an FIR has been against the accused police inspector, the Mumbai police are yet to comment on his arrest. Bhoir, famous for his dashing personality, has worked on some important cases during his crime branch stint and shares a good rapport with a senior IPS officer.
