Melbourne Renegades won their maiden Big Bash League title on Sunday at the Docklands Stadium in their home city after registering a thrilling 13-run win over Melbourne Stars. Renegades were in the deep waters for the most part of the match but they stormed right back in the last 9 overs and took the match away from the Stars to take home the trophy.

Daniel Christian was the star of the party as he struck it around with the bat and then picked two wickets with the ball to guide Renegades to victory.

This is the second time Melbourne Stars have ended up as the runners-up of the tournament.

Stars were chasing a mere target of 146 and Ben Duck scored a half-century while Marcus Stoinis scored 39 to put up 93 runs for the opening stand and put Stars in a very comfortable position.

However, it all started to fall apart after Stoinis was bowled out by Cameron Boyce in the 13th over. Peter Handscomb came and went for the duck, falling to the delivery of Daniel Christian. From 93 for 0, Stars were at 94 for 2, when Glenn Maxwell joined Duck on the crease.

With two wickets in the pocket, Renegades had got the sniff and they used that energy to good effect when Boyce struck gold for them once again with the wicket of Duck (57) on the last delivery of the 15th over.

Earlier, the Renegades suffered a collapse of their own to leave themselves a mountain to climb. Sent in to bat, the hosts slumped to 5-65 in the first 11 overs, with Jackson Bird playing a role in the dismissals of Marcus Harris (12), Sam Harper (6) and Aaron Finch (13).

Having procured top edges from Harris and Harper, Bird managed to toe a Cameron White drive onto the non-striker's stumps to run out Finch. It left the Renegades skipper frustrated enough to lay into a plastic chair in the tunnel with his cricket bat.

Fortunately for the Renegades, Tom Cooper (43*) and Christian (38*) managed to make up for the failures of the top five to drag the team to what turned out a defendable total.
