Train Runs Over Maharashtra Woman Walking On Rail Track With Earphones OnBengaluru: In the state capital of Karnataka, the most number of crimes against women in 2018 were reported, said the National Crime Report Bureau's (NCRB) 'crime in India 2017' report. According to the data, Bengaluru accounted for 53 per cent of all such cases reported from India's top-20 most populated cities followed closely by Chennai with 17 per cent and Mumbai with 8 per cent.

Out of the 1454 crimes against women reported from across the country in that year. 772 cases were registered by Bengaluru city police.

Similarly, the capital city of Karnataka also accounted for a staggering 81 per cent of all cases registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act in 2018. Out of 851 such cases, 692 were reported from Bengaluru while 159 others were brought to the attention of police in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.

In 2018, NCRB's latest report said that Madhya Pradesh is accounted for 16% of the total of 33,356 rape cases were registered in the county that year. This is the third time when MP has topped  with the most number of rape cases.  According to the Crime in India 2018 report, the victims in 2,841 of such rape cases were minors (below 18 years of age). Other states where more rape cases were reported than others in 2018 are Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh.

A central agency that collects data pertaining to criminal cases registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Special Local Laws (SLL), NCRB releases an annual list of all crimes reported in India. In its latest report, the NCRB stated that total crimes reported across the country increased by 1.8 per cent in 2018 as compared to the previous year. This means that an average 80 murders, 289 kidnappings and 91 rape cases were reported to the police in India each day of 2018.
