Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. During this, Mamta Banerjee gave kurta and sweets to PM Modi. Earlier, the two last met on 25 May 2018 at the convocation of Vishwa Bharati University in Shanti Niketan. Mamta Banerjee is considered to be a staunch opponent of the central government and PM Modi.

This protest had reached the peak in the Lok Sabha elections. Mamta refused to accept Modi as PM. She did not even attend his swearing-in ceremony. At the same time, BJP has targeted Mamata for meeting PM.

BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya has said that she is meeting the PM to rescue former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. If she does not do so, half the state ministers will be in jail in the Saradha chit fund scam.

Mukul Roy said that Mamta going to meet Modi is like a victory for BJP. However, Mamata Banerjee described it as a courtesy call. She says she will talk about the interests of Bengal during her meeting with the PM. This includes issues like renaming the state, merger of banks, Air India, BSNL.

The central government had refused to approve the state government's proposal to rename West Bengal to Bangla. The Center did not approve the proposal, stating that the move would require a constitutional amendment. After this, Mamta wrote a letter to the PM on this issue in July and asked him to take action on it soon.
