LGBTQ People Share Their Experiences about Mental Health and Suicide

Isha reached the stage wearing a red dress and a lot of bright makeup. She had an innocent and warm smile on her face. After looking very carefully, it became clear that behind this smile, her struggle is hidden. Finally, Isha reveals her struggle with tearful eyes. Isha openly told in front of everyone how she won her battle with depression.

Isha was also among those arriving at the Delhi Gate to join the 'Baikhauf-You're Not Alone' program organized for the LGBTQ community. Recalling her struggle, she said that it took me many years to take life in a positive way. She told us, 'I was only 16 when I tried to commit suicide a few days before the board exam. The children in school used to bother me about my sexuality. I started feeling that this life is not worth for me. When my wrist was bleeding, I realized in that moment and realized life is worth living. Most of them are such that I will never meet again.

21-year-old Maya tried to support Isha. However, the story of Maya herself is not much different from this. Maya told, 'I came to know about my sexuality in my childhood. I was very young, but it took me 10 years to share this with my parents. When I told the family about this, they said that I should either forget all this or leave the house. 4 years ago they kicked me out of the house and then I had no place to go. This was the time when I tried to commit suicide and today even that thinker laughs. '

Anjan, the founding member of the space NGO, said that the organization was formed to stop the trend of suicide in people. He said that people in the LGBTQ community have higher suicide rates due to depression. Anjan says, 'We do not have any official data on this because no data on sexual identity death is kept. Last year, we were informed of the suicide of five transgenders in Delhi alone. Through Your Not Alone project, we want to tell the LGBT community not to feel alone.
